17 pupils from Bowland High were joined by 5 pupils from Witton Park on the adventure of a lifetime to China in the half term holiday.
The trip started with a ‘whistle-stop’ 2 days in Beijing where pupils spent an afternoon visiting the Forbidden City and then an evening visit to the night market to try some of the local delicacies. A number of pupils and staff took on the challenge of eating a cricket but Mr Fletcher went a step further to try a barbecued cockroach – something that I’m sure he won’t be doing again in a hurry! The next day the whole group visited the Mutianyu section of The Great Wall of China which was a real trip highlight. All that remained was a spot of haggling at the Pearl Market before catching the overnight sleeper train to Shanghai.
The two days spent in and around Shanghai were superb and everybody was impressed with both the old and new parts of this somewhat cosmopolitan city. On the second day in Shanghai we took the subway to Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town which was a fabulous treat.
Then it was time to catch the train down to Fuzhou to our partner school. Pupils were met at school Number 16 with huge bouquets and teddy bears by the host families. The next five days were spent in school and on trips during the day and then with host families in the evening.
Overall this was an amazing experience and one that pupils and staff alike will not forget in a hurry.
We hope to be able to offer the experience again in future years – watch this space!
